Author Spotlight: 裘梦 (Qiu Meng)

裘梦 (Qiu Meng) is a Taiwanese romance novelist (active: 2005 - present).

She is one of the earlier authors I followed, and a large reason I feel in love with reading Chinese romance novels. To date she is the only author whose works I have all read. When I first started reading Taiwanese novels, a large problem I found was that the female heroines were mostly all very weak and incapable. They almost always lands themselves in messy situations that requires a man to clean up after them. Qiu Meng's heroines offered an escape to all of that. All her female heroines are strong-willed or independent, in fact most of her heroines are described as ordinary or plain looking girls who can be easily over-looked. Her heroes almost always falls for the girl's intelligence first, and almost always woos the girls through a battle of wits than charms. The only shame is that like most Taiwanese novelists now, Qiu Meng has slowed her publication speed in recent years so we can only look forward to maybe one or two books a year.

Recommended Reads:

恶霸九王爷 (e ba jiu wang ye) - One of Qiu Meng's most famous work, featuring one of the most sadistic and disturbing hero I have read.
三十六计擒将军 (San shi liu ji qin jiang jun) - Another time travel genre. Featuring a heroine who likes to pull pranks, and a general who can't be close to women.
总裁骗婚 (Zong cai pian hun) - One of the rare modern novels by Qiu Meng. A breezy story about a powerful company president who takes an interest in his sister's low-profile friend and coerce her into a contract marriage.
The original purpose for this blog has pretty much diminished as my interest in video editing has dwindled considerably. Instead, I decided to turn this blog into a Chinese book review site since I have been consuming a lot of Chinese romance novels lately and rather than just read and forget, I might as well take it as an opportunity to look back and absorb.

I will start with a rather old, but a past favourite that made me obsessed over the time-traveling genre for a while.

TItle: 我自望星朝天歌 (Wo Zi Wang Xin Chao Tian Ge)
Author: 七钉 (Qi Ding)
Genre: Time travel, romance, ancient
Brief Summary: Our heroine accidentally traveled back to ancient China. Struggling to adapt to the new world while trying to find a way back, she travels with her new Master's older apprentice, and falling in love along the way.

This is one of the earlier books I read and one of the more well known time traveling romance novel out there on the Chinese web. When I looked up the book again, I was pleasantly surprised by the length of the book, clocking in about 400k words, this is about a medium long read, but at the time I didn't feel the novel was all that long at all. This goes to show how much I enjoyed the novel, since these days I usually don't read anything more than 200k-300k words novel unless it was heavily recommended.

The characters and their motives are all pretty straightforward. Long time novel readers probably won't find too much events out of the ordinary. But the characters are not mapped out to be too annoying, and the heroine and hero's interactions are mostly light-hearted bantering. This is a classic case of a bickering romance. The heroine is pretty ordinary on all accounts but she's not stupid and is quite independent and brave when the time calls for it. The draw to this novel is of course the hero. He is skilled in the martial arts, fiercely loyal and protective. I love that our hero in this novel isn't a fu hei (腹黑) - which loosely translate to somewhat of a sadistic character - that is popular in most internet novels these days. He may be powerful but he has his short comings and cute side that makes him more of a fleshed out character than an all out romantic GOD.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book to new readers of the time travel genre or the Chinese internet novel since the book is breezy, the heroine is likable and the language level is not too complicated.

It's been a long time since I've posted here. I know, so much for regular updates.

Reason I've stopped posting is mainly because... well, I keep on starting projects but never finish them, so I have nothing to show for.

Today I revived an old MV I created sometime ago in Feb 2009 but was never satisfied with. I kept tweaking and tweaking it for a week until I got so sick of it I gave up. Now I lost the source file and cannot edit the video again. Alas, I decided to release it since, well, it would've just continued to rot in my private folder otherwise.

Q.E.D is really an underrated jdrama. The acting is pretty boring, the plot is meh, but something stirred when I saw this adorable couple, and because of them I throughly enjoyed watching Q.E.D.

Without further ado, please enjoy!

Galileo Movie: Suspect X

Finally, after what feels like almost a year's waiting, Suspect X finally came out with English subs. The movie was pretty well done, but that might be due to my biased fan alert which, after a year of deprived Yukawa/Utsumi, I am probably more than happy for anything they throw at me.

Antique Bakery MV

Fanmade MV for the Korean movie Antique Bakery.

Antique Bakery garnered my attention especially after watching, and enjoying the anime. Unlike most tasteless shouen-ai or yaoi (pun unintended), I enjoyed the expansion of an actual plot and character development. Smut is fun, but story is what makes a manga memoriable. The movie stayed pretty loyal to the manga, there were some changes but they were welcoming changes on my fangirl part - so no complaints. I thought the musical touch and comical splash was appropriate to give it a more "manga" feel and I tried to imitate that by making an upbeat and lighthearted MV.

First Entry

Well this is the mandatory first entry blab, eh? I'm glad I finally got this pretty layout to work, now all I have to do is think of something to fill my blurbs. Using this account on LJ as a new beginning, I will hopefully be able to consistently blog and improve my writing skills.

Osamu Mukai updated his blog today with a very cute group picture of him, Yu Yamada and Sato Takeru. It's nice to see him on a really friendly term with Yu. I hope they will be able to work on more projects together in the future and as couples too! Osamu keep on mentioning being a part of a new drama that he cannot reveal yet, he is such a tease! I really hope it is Atashinchi no Danshi. Apparently the third, forth, fifth and sixth brothers are a magician, host, model and genius! Osamu is too old to play the genius sixth brother but it'll be fun to see him take on a role as magician, host or model. Please, please let him be a part of this drama!

Update: Yes! How did they know I wanted to see Osamu as a host?!? THANK YOU! Now I'm even more pumped up to watch Atashinchi no Danshi!!
